  • Decode the chassis number and the VIN

    The smart hast got two number with which you can identify it: The chassis number and the VIN. To decode it properly, you first have to identify which one you've got right now. If it starts with WME451.. or WME453.., it's the chassis number, if it starts with WMEE.. or WMEF.., it's the VIN. Here's a overview to everything:


    Chassis Numer:

    • World manufacturer code
    • Model series
    • Vehicle type
    • RHD / LHD
    • Manufacturing plant
    • Seriel Number (roughly when it was made)

    452 -> smart Roadster (2003 - 2005)

    454 -> smart forfour (2004 - 2006)

    392 -> fortwo, Coupé Brabus

    490 -> fortwo, cabriolet

    491 -> fortwo, cabriolet

    492 -> fortwo, Cabriolet Brabus


    Your number is not there? Then your smart has probably a combustion engine. You can find an extended overview here.



    RHD / LHD (Number 10):

    1 -> left-hand drive

    2 -> right-hand drive


    Right hand drive was only made for Great Britain.



    Manufacturing plant (Number 11):

    K -> Hambach, France

    Y -> Novo mesto, Slovenia


    All fortwo come from Hambach, all forfour come from Novo mesto. So this position should match number 7-9.



    Serial number (Numbers 12-17):


    The serial number is continuous and does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the equipment of the smart. There is only one number for each number and all the preceding digits correspond to the vehicle. I can give you a few random numbers, so you can Quite roughly Inferring the year of construction of the vehicle:
